What is a concept plan?

A concept plan is a vision for how an area can be cared for and/or developed into the future. It may express how an area can grow and change over time. It can also express a commitment that an area remains the same or be preserved.

Why are we developing a concept plan for Uki Village Centre?

When we consulted the Uki community to develop Council’s Open Space Strategy (2019–2029), the community prioritised the development of a concept plan for the Uki village centre to improve pedestrian amenity and streetscape character.

The Uki village centre is surrounded by a beautiful natural environment, well-loved by the local community and enjoyed by an increasing number of visitors. The concept plan will help define a shared vision for the area and will inform future applications for funding.

What are some of the key considerations for the Uki Village Draft Concept Plan?

    •    preservation of the village ’s character and history

    •    protection of natural and cultural heritage

    •    improve accessibility and connectivity between public spaces

    •    upgrading park furniture and features

    •    provision of shade

    •    river viewing opportunities

    •    maximising existing car parking spaces and consideration for a Designated Accessible Parking Bay (DAPB)

Who owns and manages the public spaces in the Uki village centre?

The draft plan incorporates land with varying ownership and management arrangements. The following figure identifies who owns and manages the land.  The roads are managed by Tweed shire Council.

When will the Draft Concept Plan be implemented?

The draft plan is a long-term vision of how the public spaces may be developed, subject to approvals and funding. Land owners managers, including Council, the Uki Public Hall & Recreation Trust and UKIRA will look at a variety of funding sources to implement the draft plan. The draft plan will most likely occur in stages and may take several years to implement.
