Thank you for joining us in the Spot Joe Rider competition as part of Motorcycle Awareness Month! Your participation is helping raise awareness about the importance of watching out for motorcyclists and making our roads safer for everyone.
Why it matters
Motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable road users. By participating in Spot Joe Rider, you helped shine a light on the need to look twice and drive with care. Your involvement contributes to reducing crashes and near misses, making the Tweed a safer place for everyone.
Motorcyclists are overrepresented in road trauma. From 2018 to 2022, motorcycles comprised only 4.4% of registered vehicles in NSW but accounted for 18.6% of road fatalities. Transport for NSW data from 2018 to 2022 reports that motorcyclists accounted for 19% of all road fatalities and 22% of serious injuries in NSW. In contrast, within the Tweed during the same period, motorcyclists were involved in 47.6% of all road fatalities and 30.5% of serious injuries.
Male riders accounted for 96.7% of fatalities and 92.8% of serious injuries. The age group most affected (45.8% of fatalities and 50.8% of serious injuries) were riders between 30 and 59 years old, with an increase from 2022 to 2023 (from 21 to 24 deaths).
Young and novice riders (aged 17 to 29) accounted for 31.8% of fatalities and 36.8% of injuries, highlighting their road vulnerability.
Looking ahead
We’ll be back in October 2026 with another exciting round of Spot Joe Rider. Stay tuned for your chance to get involved again – whether as a rider or a keen-eyed community member helping to make our roads safer.
In the meantime, keep an eye out for motorcyclists and continue to drive with awareness and care.
