Concept design - proposed park

Upgrades to Fingal Foreshore Park to be completed in time for Christmas.

Tweed's latest inclusive children’s play space is now open.

The park is located on Marine Drive in Fingal Head, next to the Fingal Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Our new addition is the third inclusive play space to open in the Tweed.

An inclusive play space means it is easy for people to get to the play space and access the play equipment, there are a variety of items that everyone can interact with and there is shade and seating that allows families or carers to stay longer.

Council partnered with the local community to create a recreational space that is more inclusive of everyone. We are grateful for the work of locals who have been instrumental in shaping the design of the park.

You can review the Fingal Foreshore Park Concept Plan here.

The concept plan was determined by the outcome of community engagement activities including a community survey and a pop up Family Fun Day in the Park. Over 100 local residents and visitors attended the event in the park held on Saturday 14 September 2019. The community feedback can viewed here.

The site was the subject of an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA), which improved the understanding, identification, and assessment of Aboriginal cultural heritage values within the site and Fingal Head area. Whilst the process has been lengthy, the outcome has been worth the wait.

The play space has a natural look and blends in with the surrounds. The play space was designed to celebrate the rich history of Fingal Head through art, play and interpretive signage.

What’s new?

  • new play equipment for children aged 2 to 12 years including swings and slides
  • accessible carousel
  • nature play (including water play, a cubby, timber climbing net and balance log)
  • a yarning circle and art poles painted by students from Fingal Head Public School
  • accessible picnic table, seating and drinking fountain
  • linking pathways
  • additional trees and landscaping
  • accessible parking

Funding

This inclusive play space upgrade has been made possible through the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play program. Council received a $107,000 grant and contributed an additional $220,000.

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government in collaboration with Tweed Shire Council.

Thanks for having your say on the proposed upgrade to Fingal Foreshore Park, Fingal Head

Over 60 people completed the survey which canvased ideas for the new play space.

Stage One survey – July 2019

    63 responses

Respondents to the survey supported the idea of upgrading the park and told us what they would like to see (in order of priority):

    • Natural and built shade for sun protection
    • Natural play equipment that caters for 2-12 years
    • Pathways and improved access for people with a disability or a mobility impairment
    • A cultural play space that captures the cultural values of the site
    • Slide, climbing equipment, swings
    • Improved access to the viewing platform
    • Seating areas

Protecting the existing open space for picnics, informal games and other activities, providing outdoor fitness equipment, and improved maintenance were also important to the local community.

The proposal and design of the new play space will also be determined by the outcome of a Cultural Heritage Assessment of the area. The assessment will improve the understanding, identification and assessment of Aboriginal cultural heritage values within the site.
