Why have we developed a new Dam Safety Management Policy?
Dam safety in NSW is now regulated under the new Dam Safety Act 2015 and the Dam Safety Regulation 2019 which came into force on 1 November 2019 with a two year transitional period. As the declared dam owner, Tweed Shire Council is responsible to ensure prescribed standards and requirements relating to safety, operation and maintenance of the dam are achieved.
Council has prepared a Draft Dam Safety Management Policy to address the regulation. This policy will formalise Council’s position on and commitment to dam safety management.
What’s in the Draft Dam Safety Management Policy?
The Policy sets out how Tweed Shire Council will manage, operate and maintain Clarrie Hall Dam in a manner that is safe, minimises the risks associated with the unlikely possibility of dam failure and ensures compliance with dam safety standards.
Please note: This policy does not relates to public amenities on site or allowed activities at the site and does not relate to any major modifications to the dam i.e. raising of the dam for increased storage.

It should be noted that in accordance with Council policy and the provisions of the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 – ‘GIPAA,’ confidential information contained within submissions may be released upon a request being made by a third party.
