Councillor Expenses and Facilities Policy

About the project

Tweed Shire Council is updating how we support Councillors to do their jobs — and we want to hear from you.

Councillors represent the community and take part in meetings, site visits and events. Council provides support so they can do this work, including travel, technology and training.

This policy explains what Councillors can claim and what support Council provides to help them carry out their civic duties. It sets clear rules, maximum amounts Council will pay for specific expenses and facilities, and reporting requirements so public money is used properly and openly. It also ensures the community can see how spending is monitored.

We have prepared the policy in line with the Local Government Act 1993, the Local Government (General) Regulation 2021, and the NSW Office of Local Government guidelines.

What's proposed?

What this policy covers

This policy ensures accountability and transparency and aligns councillor expenses and facilities with community expectations. The policy sets out the maximum amounts council will pay for specific expenses and facilities. Councillors must not receive any private or political benefit from these expenses or facilities.

What’s changed

We’ve updated the policy to:

  • align with NSW Government legislation and guidance
  • make the rules clearer and easier to understand
  • set clear limits on expenses and facilities
  • update travel, meals and accommodation rules
  • clarify mobile phone and technology allowances
  • include support for health and wellbeing
  • strengthen reporting, auditing and transparency
  • better support Councillors in undertaking their duties.
