23 October 2023: This consultation has now concluded. Thank you to everyone who had their say. This project page received 888 site visits during the time it was on exhibition and 198 downloads of documents. 49 people completed the survey and 4 online sessions were made available for people to learn more about the Conservation Strategy.

Tweed Conservation Strategy is on exhibition from 7 September - 19 October

Help shape the future of the Tweed's natural environment by providing feedback on the draft strategy.

Protecting the Tweed’s natural environment is critical in the face of increasing climate change, as well as pressures associated with urbanisation and population growth.

We undertook a series of community engagement activities in 2022 to help shape a conservation strategy for the Tweed. Thank you to everyone who made a submission. You told us that a healthy natural environment is extremely important to you and that we can improve our conservation programs by improving how we protect and manage the environment. A draft Conservation Strategy is now available for review.

Read the Draft Tweed Conservation Strategy here.

The purpose of a Conservation Strategy

The purpose of this strategy is to communicate how Council will lead environmental conservation programs and work with the community to achieve specific goals outlined in the strategy. This Conservation Strategy will guide our actions to protect, improve, collaborate and adapt to conserve the Tweed’s natural environment for future years to come.

What does the strategy aim to achieve?

The Conservation Strategy is a 10-year plan with specific goals to help us achieve six key conservation targets. These are:

  • Shire-wide vegetation cover is maintained at a minimum of 51%
  • 30% of the pre-clear extent of major vegetation community types in the shire is protected - see Vegetation Map. (For the best experience use Google Chrome on a PC or laptop - the mapping tool is not designed for mobile phones.)
  • Tweed has funded and implemented a process for monitoring and protecting threatened and priority species.
  • Improvements are made in habitat condition and connectivity.
  • Broad participation and engagement in conservation programs and natural area management.
  • Biodiversity climate risk adaptation plan developed and implemented.
