How will the policy be applied?

The Policy provides for two options to support the delivery of compensatory planting; direct planting or financial settlement.  When you apply to remove a tree, Council will determine what compensation is required, and advise of the number of replacement plantings necessary.

You then decide how best to achieve the compensation.  You can plant the compensatory plants onsite (known as direct planting), you can request that Council to undertake the planting on your behalf (known as a financial settlement) or you can do a combination of both.

    How is compensation calculated?

Council will use the Compensatory Planting Calculator to estimate the tree replacement value. The calculator takes into account factors such as tree size, location and special tree values such as whether the tree is also a koala habitat tree, contains hollows or meets the definition of a very large tree.

Check out the Compensatory Calculator: Compensatory planting calculator (draft)

    When is compensation required?

    Compensation is required when:

    • Council issues a tree permit or development consent that includes a condition for compensatory planting.

    When is compensation not required?

    Compensation is not required when:

    • Tree or vegetation removal is not regulated by Council such as small garden plants or ornamentals.
