Council is seeking community feedback on the future of the parklets in the Murwillumbah CBD.
The parklets were introduced, along with eight vibrant public art seats and plants, during COVID as a temporary trial to bring greenery, seating and places to connect into the heart of town. While they were originally intended to be short term, strong community support saw them remain in place.
Since then, Council has made other permanent streetscape improvements across the CBD.
We are now inviting the wider community to share their views on the next steps — whether the parklets should remain or be relocated to alternative sites within Murwillumbah or nearby areas.
In 2020, Council installed two temporary parklets as part of the Tweed Green Parklets, Public Art and Activation Project in the Murwillumbah CBD:
One in Queen Street (on corner of Queen St and Murwillumbah St)
One in Brisbane Street (near M|Arts)
The parklets extend from the footpath into car parking spaces and include seating, planting and interactive elements. They were designed as:
Temporary and moveable structures
Recyclable and low impact
A way to support social connection and street life post COVID
Why are we asking for feedback now?
Council has recently received feedbackat the Murwillumbah Business Chamber meeting in March 2026, noting increased demand for car parking and observations of anti-social behaviour in the parklets. Given this feedback, Council wants to check in with the broader community before making any decisions.
What can you have your say on?
We are inviting feedback on the future of the parklets, including:
Whether the parklets should remain in the Murwillumbah CBD.
Whether the parklets should be relocated to another location within Murwillumbah or surrounding areas.
Suggestions for alternative sites for the parklets (please note any new locations would require further assessment and approval from relevant land or asset owners).
How often you personally use the parklets.
Your feedback will help inform Council’s decision‑making about the future use and location of these community spaces. What we need to keep in mind:
CBD car parking is in high demand, particularly while the Murwillumbah multi-storey carpark next to Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre is under construction.
Some local businesses prefer the parklets be moved elsewhere in Murwillumbah.
