Campaign date: Saturday 18 October to Sunday 26 October 2025
Just wear the vest – that’s it!
Joe Riders take to the roads each year, doing what they normally do (or a few extra rides if they’re up for it), wearing the bold yellow ‘I am Joe Rider’ vest and giving drivers a reason to double check.
Their presence on the road sends a message that’s hard to ignore: We’re out here. Look out for us. It tackles the all-too-common 'Sorry Mate, I Didn’t See You' (SMIDSY) excuse that puts motorcycle riders at risk and helps reinforce the importance of motorcycle safety across the Tweed.
And for the community? There’s a fun, interactive twist. Locals are invited to spot a Joe Rider and enter daily draws and a grand prize competition, making road safety something everyone can get behind.
Why they volunteer
It’s fun – Joe Riders get to enjoy their rides while playing an active role in improving motorcycle safety.
They rest and recharge with $15 Why Leave Town vouchers for every ride, helping them stay alert on the road.
Most importantly, they’re part of a community of like-minded riders making a real impact in a statewide safety initiative that reminds everyone to look out for motorcyclists.
What it takes
Here’s what it involves to be a Joe Rider – a simple commitment that helps raise awareness and promote motorcycle safety during Motorcycle Awareness Month each October.
To take part, riders need:
a valid motorcycle licence
a registered and comprehensively insured motorcycle
protective gear (gloves, helmet, jacket/pants, boots)
a commitment to at least one 30 to 60 minute ride in the Tweed Shire during the campaign period
attendance at a face-to-face induction session, which covers everything needed to take part safely and confidently, plus the chance to connect with other riders and receive a Joe Rider thank-you pack
Some Joe Riders commit to the full campaign, while others take part for just a few days – every ride makes a difference.
Registrations for this year are now closed, but keep an eye out for the next call out ahead of Motorcycle Awareness Month for your chance to ride for a safer Tweed.
