What about water play?

Small-scale water play will be delivered as Stage 1 of the project. This will include a water pump with a flowing creek line and inclusive water and sand play table.

Planning for this project started in 2019 and the grant funding for Stage 1 and Stage 2 does not include large-scale water play. The proposal for a large scale water park was presented to Council in April this year as a submission to the draft Jack Evans Boat Harbour Plan of Management. Council may consider a large-scale water park in the Tweed as a separate project.

How has the community been consulted?

The community has participated in the design and decision-making process:

    • we built on the extensive community feedback received when Jack Evans Boat Harbour Plan of Management and the Open Space Strategy (2019-2029) were developed
    • key stakeholders including the Aboriginal Advisory Committee, Equal Access and Advisory Committee, Youth Council and the Tweed Chamber of Commerce and Industry were engaged
    • local Bundjalung artist Christine Slabb collaborated with Aboriginal stakeholders to provide a framework for cultural content and the telling of cultural stories within the playspace
    • a community survey was distributed to Disability Services and Indigenous Services and their clients (57 responses)
    • we hosted online workshops with local primary and high schools to share their vision for the regional playspace.

How has this project been funded?

    Funding

    • Council received a design grant for $30,000 from Variety, the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT to create an inclusive park and playspace with the design completed by local Tweed landscape architect Plummer & Smith.
    • The park will be brought to life thanks to the NSW Government’s $600,000 commitment and Council’s contribution of $380,000 to the project.
    • Funding for Stage 1 was received through the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grant Program and its Everyone Can Play Grant Program.
    • Funding for Stage 2 was received through the Federal Government's Building Better Regions Fund - Infrastructure Projects Stream.
