Further investigations underway into a solution

Council consultants GHD are now investigating the viability, cost and design options for:

• narrowing the weir and installing an automatic temporary barrier
• permanently raising the weir.

The following issues are under investigation.

• What might be an acceptable frequency of over-topping - sometimes or never?
• If the weir were to overtop, what actions would be needed?
• As sea levels continue to rise, how long should the implemented prevention measure last - 20, 30 or 40 years, or until 2100?
• What type of structure could be placed on top of the existing weir without compromising the structural integrity of the weir.

When these further investigations are complete, the matter will be referred to the elected Council for a decision on a way forward.
