Future of Chinderah

It is important that the community’s vision for the future of Chinderah is central to Council’s decision making about how Chinderah changes over time.

By having your say you will be help create a shared community vision for the future of Chinderah to guide development of the Chinderah Locality Plan.

The Locality Plan will set out a vision for the future of Chinderah and identify unique features that it would like to maintain. It will then set out goals and actions that will guide future decision making about how land can be used in Chinderah. It will help ensure the community’s vision for Chinderah is achieved over the coming years.

140 people attended two Community Conversations at Cudgen Leagues Club on 21 October. Over twenty different themes came out of the attendee's feedback including the importance of acknowledging Aboriginal and South Sea Islander heritage, protecting the natural environment including wildlife corridors, a potential community garden and community hub.

Each attendee voted for the top five themes that they believed are most important to be considered for the future of Chinderah. The top five themes that received the most votes from the community have been added to the discussion forum below.

    "Improve lighting and walkways along Chinderah Bay Drive and Chinderah Road along the waterfront"

    "More picnic tables and waterfront encouragement."

    "Footpaths and foreshore. Continue the work done on the riverfront at Jennars Corner to the South. Increase usage of the foreshore past the pub, Cubby Bakehouse and Pontoon. More usable picnic areas (Cubby), Play areas. Make it usable."

    "Foreshore development. Pro active family and entertainment areas along the river. Jettys, BBQs, Gardens, public toilets, open air cinema."

    "Plant more trees on the river bank. Natives would be ideal."

    "Flood mitigation rock wall along river."

    "Resolve flooding issues especially when considering new developments - not making the problem worse."

    "Stop the filling of the floodplain surrounding Chinderah. Increasing levels of land forces water to where it shouldn't be. Major flooding events are expected. Minor flooding is becoming worse."

    "Drainage - higher Tweed Bank, deep drainage for increased rainfall and cyclones."

    "Encourage boating 1. boating access 2. storage 3. facilities 4. boat ramps"

    "Pontoons more for public and private use. Marina in still water opposite Markwell's Fish Processing Plant."

    "Chinderah boat ramp upgrade and dredging - very dangerous to access at low tide and rocky. Improve seating and shade and extra parking. Formalised parking would improve safety (on river refuelling)"

    "Village feel in town centre - Small business, parks, cafes."

    "Keep village environment - no high rise or marinas."
